Freedom of Expression Gagged
The decision to cancel RightsCon by the Zambian government signals a troubling moment for digital rights and democratic engagement. Freedom of expression, the right to freedom of association, and freedom of assembly cannot be conditional, nor should they be subject to shifting interpretations of “national values”. This cancellation happening mere days before World Press Freedom Day, signals growing systematic narrowing of the civic space and media freedom in Zambia and the region in general. In recognition of these current events and to commemorate World Press Freedom Day, Moxii Africa along with Campaign for Free Expression and Campaign on Digital Ethics (CODE), will host a dialogue addressing the silencing and polarisation of expression in today’s information landscape.
