Privacy Policy
Moxii Africa is the trading name of Media Monitoring Africa Trust, a South African non-profit organisation working for open and trusted information (“Moxii Africa”, “we”, “us”). This policy explains what personal information we collect through the website moxiiafrica.org, why we collect it, and the rights you have over it under the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”).
We have written this policy to describe what we actually do — not what a template says websites usually do. We do not sell personal information, we do not run advertising on this site, and we do not use advertising or social media trackers.
1. Who is responsible for your information
The responsible party under POPIA is Media Monitoring Africa Trust (trading as Moxii Africa), Art Centre, 6th Street, Parkhurst, Johannesburg, 2193, South Africa. Our Information Officer is the Director of Media Monitoring Africa Trust. You can reach us through our contact page.
2. The information we collect
Information you give us. When you use a form on this site — to contact us, subscribe to our newsletter, ask about donating or volunteering, or make a media enquiry — we collect what you put in the form: typically your name, email address, and your message or request. Nothing on this site requires you to create an account or password.
Information collected automatically. Like almost every website, the platform our site runs on keeps standard server records when you visit: your IP address, browser type, the pages you view and when. We use this only to run the site, keep it secure, and understand in aggregate how it is used. We do not use it to identify or profile you.
What we do not collect. We do not collect payment card details on this site, we do not track you across other websites, and we do not use analytics or advertising trackers. If that changes, we will update this policy first.
3. Why we use your information
We use personal information only to respond to the message or request you sent us; to send you our newsletter, if you asked for it (every mailing includes a way to unsubscribe); to process donation or volunteering enquiries you initiate; to operate, secure and improve the website; and to comply with the law.
The lawful bases for this processing under POPIA are your consent (which you may withdraw at any time), the steps needed to respond to a request you made, our legitimate interest in running a secure, working website, and compliance with legal obligations. We will not use your information for a different purpose without telling you.
4. Who we share it with
We do not sell, rent or trade personal information. We share it only with the service providers (“operators” under POPIA) who make the website work on our behalf — the platform that hosts this website and stores form submissions (Webflow, Inc.), the email system where messages and form notifications are received and handled (Google Workspace), and the service that holds our newsletter list and sends the newsletter — and, where the law genuinely requires it, with authorities under a lawful demand. Our operators may only use your information to provide their service to us and must keep it confidential and secure.
5. Where your information is stored
Our website platform and some of our service providers store information on servers outside South Africa (including in the United States and the European Union). POPIA allows this where the recipient is bound by an agreement or rules that protect your information to a similar standard, and we only use providers that give those protections.
6. Cookies and embedded content
This site uses only the essential cookies our website platform needs to function and to remember basic preferences. We do not set advertising, analytics or social media tracking cookies. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; the site will still work.
Some pages embed content served from other platforms — for example, the live Dexter media monitoring dashboard and video players. When you view a page with embedded content, the platform serving that content may set its own cookies under its own privacy policy, as if you had visited it directly.
7. Our other platforms
Moxii Africa also runs separate platforms — including Real411 (real411.org.za), PAdRe (padre.org.za) and MARS (mars.org.za) — and links to partner sites. Each of those has its own privacy policy governing what you submit there; this policy covers moxiiafrica.org only. This matters most for Real411, where lodging a complaint necessarily involves personal information: please read the privacy policy on that platform before reporting.
8. How long we keep it
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purpose we collected it: correspondence for as long as the matter (and any follow-up) is live, newsletter details until you unsubscribe, and website records for the platform’s standard short retention. Where a law requires us to keep something longer, we keep it for that period and no more.
9. How we protect it
We use reputable platforms with encryption in transit (HTTPS), restrict access to personal information to the people who need it to do their work, and protect the accounts that hold it. No system is perfectly secure, but if a breach ever puts your information at risk, we will notify the Information Regulator and affected people as POPIA requires.
10. Your rights
Under POPIA you may, at any time: ask whether we hold personal information about you, and request a copy; ask us to correct or delete information that is inaccurate, out of date, or no longer necessary; object to processing, including withdrawing consent to the newsletter (or simply use the unsubscribe link); and ask us to stop using your information for a particular purpose. Requests for access to records may also be made under the Promotion of Access to Information Act 2 of 2000.
Contact us through our contact page and we will respond as soon as reasonably possible, and within any period the law prescribes.
If you believe we have mishandled your personal information and we have not resolved your complaint, you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa): JD House, 27 Stiemens Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg; enquiries@inforegulator.org.za; inforegulator.org.za.
11. Children
This website is intended for general audiences and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through it. Where Moxii Africa programmes involve children (such as our digital literacy work), information is handled under those programmes’ own safeguards and with the required consent.
12. Changes to this policy
When we change this policy we will update it here and change the date at the top. If a change meaningfully affects how we handle your information, we will say so prominently on this page.
