South Africa’s Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) and the South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) convened the first ever media-focused parallel event to the G20 in Johannesburg.

The M20 initiative, an independent joint programme of Media Monitoring Africa (MMA) and Sanef, will host the M20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa on 1st and 2nd of September 2025.

On Monday, as part of the various summits related to G20, global leaders, media, policymakers and civil society will convene in Johannesburg, for the M20 Summit.

Unlike news media, where organisations like Media Monitoring Africa track gender representation, there is no regulatory requirement in South Africa for monitoring airplay by gender.

Media Monitoring Africa has also raised concern about the use of social media influencers in political campaigns. Bird has cautioned that their involvement could jeopardise democratic processes.

It does not require platforms, schools, or service providers to assess how their digital systems affect children. Nor does it regulate how educational or health institutions collect, process, or store children’s data.

The event, Fighting Climate Disinformation: Information Integrity for Climate Change and the Role of African Media, was organised by Media Monitoring Africa alongside the South.

The summit was hosted at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Studies (STIAS), from 23 to 24 July.

This isn’t the first such warning regarding the SABC’s operational continuity.
