South Africa's media industry is facing growing pressure, with 171 eNCA employees potentially facing retrenchment, the developments have renewed scrutiny of SACTWU's relationship with HCI, which stretches back almost three decades, and the potential tension between its role as a trade union and a major investor. Meanwhile Media24 says more than 100 newsroom positions are already in restructuring, with another 19 business news editorial jobs under threat. Staff at The Herald and Daily Dispatch were also recently left without their July salaries, raising concerns about the financial sustainability of established news organisations.
