Sex work, the media, and online platforms

This submission addresses the representation of sex work in the media and the impact of online platform policies on those involved in the sex trade, directed at regulators, media bodies, and technology governance actors.

It examines how media framing of sex work reinforces stigma and hinders evidence-based policy, and how platform content moderation rules — often implemented in response to anti-trafficking legislation — have had harmful unintended consequences for sex workers' safety and livelihoods.

The submission recommends the development of ethical media guidelines for reporting on sex work, and calls on online platforms to engage with affected communities in designing moderation frameworks that protect human rights while addressing exploitation.
