SOS coalition and MMA joint submission on the draft white paper on audio and audiovisual media service and online content safety

This joint submission by the SOS Coalition and Media Monitoring Africa responds to the South African government's draft White Paper on Audio and Audiovisual Content Services, offering civil society's perspective on proposed broadcasting reforms.

The submission critiques aspects of the White Paper that are seen as insufficient to address media transformation and public interest imperatives, particularly regarding local content, regulatory independence, and community broadcasting.

Recommendations include robust public interest obligations, stronger community broadcasting support, and the establishment of a genuinely independent regulatory authority capable of holding all content services to account.
