Professor Murungi succeeds Professor Frans Viljoen, whose visionary leadership over many years established the Centre as a continental leader in human rights education, research, advocacy and capacity development.

Professor Murungi's appointment is particularly historic as she becomes the first woman to serve as Director of the Centre for Human Rights in its 40-year history.
